Mother Sun - “Mustard Seed”

From their forthcoming LP, Meadow 6, British Columbia’s Mother Sun arrive on our blog with the psychedelically-tinged “Mustard Seed.”

If you happen to be a fan of authentically crafted, dreamy indie rock that oozes with analogue sauce, you’re about to fall in love. Pressing play prompts the sound of some vibey guitar dispersed across the top of an eager hi-hat groove. Moments later, the arrangement comes to life with an early 1970s-inspired rhythm section and organ tones for days.

We’re picking up some late-1990s Beck vibes here as well, primarily within the chilled-out upper register of the vocal performance. And while the lyrics are not always easy to decipher, “Mustard Seed” is a freakin’ jam, filled to its trippy tippy top with moments of dynamic variation to send you floating along your journey through this crazy thing called life.

Mustard Seed” ebbs and flows quite magnificently, with a dramatic shift on the final third, conjured into existence by a lone piano performance. From there, elements gradually arrive for a grand crescendo, including a melodic bass line, jazzy drum beat, and a retro-effected guitar that has brought us back to the song for multiple spins.

Mother Sun describe “Mustard Seed“ as “revenge of the plants, a post-apocalyptic green world renewal where the earth eats the trash, and the small human population resides on floating islands in the sky.” If you like what you hear, and we know that you will, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the rest of the album, due for release on October 4th via Earth Libraries.
