Monster Planet - “Lover Girl”

From Kansas City, we are pleased to bring you the extremely raw and unrestrained debut from Julia Desimone, aka Monster Planet, entitled “Lover Girl.”

The tune opens with a thick and fuzzy guitar riff strewn across a layer of synth, resulting in an ear-worm melody that is sure to instantly capture your attention. Desimone’s vocal arrives with the introduction of a barebones beat and the recipe is distinctly reminiscent of the ‘90s, with sounds that brought fame to renowned artists, such as Juliana Hatfield and Liz Phair.

Desimone has deployed backing vocals in all the right places, causing us to draw comparisons to the likes of Veruca Salt. And while we sincerely do not mean to diminish the impact of “Lover Girl” with these similarities, we find it extremely refreshing to hear a song that conjures the days of authentic music, before autotune stepped in and created an entire generation of “singers.”

But what you will find in Monster Planet’s sound is an attribute that cannot be added via digital manipulation: passion. For most of its duration, “Lover Girl” maintains a sharp level of emotionally-charged pop-rock demeanor, which adds a significant amount of lo-fi garage-rock flair that we simply cannot resist.

And be sure to check out the video, which contains cameos from one of the greatest dog breeds ever: the Boston terrier!
