mokina - “true”
Montreal-based indie folk artist mokina has just released the sweet sounds of “true,” the debut single from her upcoming EP, Mirage.
“true” encompasses everything we’ve come to love about the indie folk genre. The track begins with some melancholic strums from a clean and soft electric guitar, wonderfully setting the vibe for the approaching themes of “the illusions/delusions of love, attraction, expectations and letting go.”
mokina’s vocal is next to arrive, magnificently lo-fi and intimate, as though captured in the emotional moment that the song was written. The overall performance is one that feels as though the listener is being offered a glimpse into the private thoughts of the songwriter, which, as far as we’re concerned, is the very essence of modern folk music.
About a third of the way through “true,” the vintage-tinged notes of a bass arrive, ushering in a steady rhythm from the drum kit. And although the introduction of these additional elements expand the arrangement, the track never abandons the immediacy of its raw and intimate character– even as multiple layers of auxiliary vocals emerge.
“true” briefly crescendoes upon the arrival of a string section before nestling itself back into the sparseness of its initial guitar performance. If this tune is indicative of what the rest of the EP has in store for our ears, we truly cannot wait to hear the rest of it.
