Mirrorball - “Condo Pond”

As we drift into the holidays, Southern California-based duo Mirrorball serve up a bouncy, ’80s-inspired helping of west coast indie pop: “Condo Pond.”

The arrangement is dominated by a plethora of electronic elements, including layers of keys and synths atop a steady digital beat. The mood is quite carefree and joyous, which should help to stave off the inevitable sting of seasonal depression, particularly if you, like us, find yourself completely landlocked. And while we typically find ourselves drawn to a more melancholic sound, we find that our hearts require the sweeter vibe of songs like “Condo Pond” from November through February.

Where this track truly wins us over is through lead vocalist Alexandra Johnstone’s ethereally-charged, multi-layered vocal performance. Her delivery puts the “dream” in dream pop, coated in a thick sheen of reverb, with auxiliary vocals that accentuate the production. And if you happen to enjoy the more delicate sounds of artists such as TOPS, Men I Trust, or Pearl & The Oysters, as well as a dash of Fleetwood Mac, then you are absolutely going to want “Condo Pond” in your ears.

Another highlight here is the inclusion of a bridge, which many artists seem to forgo altogether these days. We suspect that its presence is due to the craftsmanship of composer Scott Watson, who, together with Johnstone, never cease to amaze us with the offerings of Mirrorball. The duo adds that “Condo Pond is “a dreamy exploration of in-between spaces—condo ponds and empty malls—where nostalgia blurs with the unfamiliar, inviting listeners to linger a little longer in those half-remembered moments.”

As we state-siders make the trek home for some of grandma’s cookin’, let’s add “Condo Pond” to the road trip. Connect with Mirrorball: Spotify | Instagram | Facebook
