Mimi Pretend - “I Still Wear Your Ring”
Mimi Pretend’s new release, “I Still Wear Your Ring,” is fantastic. There is a really great Mazzy Star vibe to this song. There’s nothing particularly new here– nothing cutting edge, but there is beautiful, measured, genuine songwriting, and to greet such art with any kind of disdain would be nothing short of a travesty.
Mimi Pretend has made something beautiful and she has, in my opinion, completely made it her own. It is lush, lovely, sad, contemplative, and reflective, with a breezy vocal that is relaxed and hauntingly beautiful. The tone is constantly unfolding and is as dreamy as the dreamiest lullaby. It perfectly encapsulates the whole sultry/dangerous vibe.
The music contains subtle, but evocative hints of 1960s classic R&B, along with ambient and fragrant psychedelia. The song’s main chorus sections are given movement, primarily through their use of percussion. There is a really lovely, wide and open sound to these sections. For me, this is a really great record and would be the ideal backdrop for a gloomy day or the perfect accompaniment for wallowing in one’s self-pity. It is the kind of song and sound in which anyone, at some point, can find pure enjoyment and a sense of solace.
