Matt Monsoor - “Jeremy”

LaCrosse, Wisconsin-based Matt Monsoor has just released the gorgeous, slow indie rocker, “Jeremy.” This song is a definite vibe– a slice of indie rock you cannot resist, with its slick nostalgic tones and dirty, bluesy grooves.

Driving the track forward is a well-executed rhythm section. In the early stages, brushes are used, helping to foster a soft and intimate atmosphere. This jazzy element also provides a pleasing pulse that does not overpower the other elements, helping to draw you into the music and great vocal performance. This soon gives way to a subtle yet steady beat, which helps build anticipation.

As the track gains momentum, the drums adopt an almost fully rock ‘n’ roll Lennon-esque groove, particularly when coupled with the thick bass. It evokes a similar feel to “Scared” crossed with the gritty, blues-infused White Album era of The Beatles. Splashes of piano, accordion, handclaps, and expressive lead guitar help clothe the track in a lush, dynamic sense of texture. Each element is carefully used to create depth and atmosphere. “Jeremy” is beautifully arranged.

The vocal of Monsoor is strikingly unique and soulful. Filled with breathy expressive phrasing, it acts almost as a musical instrument, guiding you through the building grooves. The touches of backing vocals add a delightfully quirky quality, as well as act as ear candy. Lyrically, the story woven into “Jeremy” is purposefully kept hidden. This deliberate choice creates a special bond between the music and each person’s imagination.

Jeremy” is a song that will resonate with lovers of classic, late‘60s and early ‘70s pop rock. It has currents of Lennon running though it, but never feels like a cliché. This track is definitely one to check out and is taken from Monsoor’s EP Better Things.
