Major Love - “One Woman”

Edmonton, Alberta-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Colleen Brown, aka Major Love, has completely blown us away with her latest single, “One Woman.”

The track opens with a rich and robust, full-band arrangement that harkens back to the days of analogue, long before VSTs populated most modern productions. In fact, the vintage vibe is so authentic here that it is not at all difficult to imagine the band huddled around a set of condenser mics in some live room from yesteryear. In a word, the sound is colossal.

As Brown begins her vocal performance, she immediately nails our niche for that classic Joni Mitchell vibe, instantly winning the attention of anyone within earshot. We are also detecting a great deal of Brandi Carlile in the richness of her vibrato, as well as some of the grit that made us such huge fans of Sharon Van Etten. No matter where your tastes align, you are going to find something you love within “One Woman.”

Ear candy comes by way of the lush vocal harmonies that sound as though an entire choir has been utilized, not to mention the exquisite guitar solo that emerges just past midpoint. Each element has been carefully placed by an actual human being, which brings an inspiring sense of authenticity to “One Woman.” In fact, on Brown’s new record, you can expect to hear contributions from members of Scenic Route To Alaska, Jesse and the Dandelions, Elijah Abrams, and Aaron Goldstein.

One Woman” is the kind of track that sounds as though it is being performed from the stage. From its glorious swells of vocal layering, to its prolific stereo spread, we are confident that you will find one of your new favorite songs as soon as you press that play button.

When speaking about “One Woman,” Brown adds: I wanted to highlight the way women are pitted against one another, and question the idea that there are only so many spots available for women to succeed. This felt especially true for me in my twenties, but as I get older it's more apparent that it's just bogus. We always lose when we fight with each other instead of banding together - when we spend time comparing ourselves and being in a state of jealousy instead of celebrating one another. It chips away at our self esteem when we don’t stand up for our own worth, personally, but also collectively, with and for one another.”

While “One Woman” is only the first song that we’ve heard from Major Love, we are confident in saying that it will not be the last time that her work is featured on our site. Connect with Major Love: Instagram | Facebook | Spotify | Bandcamp
