Magic City Hippies - “Enemies”
From Miami, USA, Magic City Hippies have just released the delicious, groove-laden indie pop track, “Enemies.”
Built over a classic four-on-the-floor drum beat that is packed with disco punch and syncopation, as well as some tasteful splashes of 1980s-inspired drum fills, “Enemies” is an incredibly slick and polished production, sophisticatedly designed to get your body moving.
Though the layers above the drums and funky bass look back to a time when late 1970s disco was transitioning into 1980s pop, much in the same way Michael Jackson’s Thriller straddled the divide, the fluid, chugging guitar parts and atmospheric synths feel incredibly fresh and modern.
The vocal work is also incredibly ‘classic’ with a smooth, soulful, and heartfelt performance. The emotion and passion (and also fun) is palpable in the delivery and execution. Helping pull the vocal into the modern day are subtle synth texturing effects. These are tastefully done, never distracting from the lyrics or feeling overused.
“Enemies” is the title track and first song written for Magic City Hippies’ forthcoming album. On the track, the band adds: “Enemies is a brooding, cruising slice of pop melancholy - like a soundtrack to breaking up with your lover and then riding off on a jet ski into the Miami sunset… it has served as a thematic centre that spanned the entire creative process for what revealed itself to be a groove-cantered break-up record of kinetic sad bangers.”
