LuxJury - “Couples Therapy”

London-based indie-pop trio LuxJury are back with their new single, “Couples Therapy.” The song is a striking slice of indie-pop storytelling, oozing with stripped-back, meditative, melancholic, and romantic vibes that are easy to get lost in.

Couples Therapy” opens to the intimate sounds of electric guitar. The shimmering tones are gentle, yet there is a melancholic rawness as they weave reflectively and soothingly. The guitar is wonderfully expressive and perfectly encapsulates the emotion that is at the heart of this great track. In places, the guitar breaks into a riff, which perfectly punctuates the narrative.

As the song progresses, bass pulses expressively underneath, creating a satisfying groove and sense of motion. Drums accentuate this groove with a steady pulse. The real highlight is the vocal, which permeates an emotional depth and elegance, bringing a lush authenticity to the storytelling lyrics. Surrounded in places by gospel-like layers, the track is given a soulful and spiritual dimension whilst offering nods to R&B, soul, jazz, and even pop from the 1960s and 1970s.

Couples Therapy” emphasizes the skill of lead vocalist Nicole Fermie in narrating engrossing tales with a strong dose of ironic self-awareness. On the track, Fermie tells the story of the consequences of a wandering eye, and the complexities of romanticised encounters.

Fermie adds, “The song is a balance of indulgence and responsibility, where the verses are an enticement towards the new and tantalising, whereas the chorus - literally a chorus of multiple voices - brings you back to reality. Underneath it all, you feel the bitterness of denial and the constant effort to oppress how we feel.”

Couples Therapy” is exquisitely genuine, soulful, and brimmed-full of opulent, old-school vibes and melodies. The creative, honest, and distinct tones make this track one that is definitely worth checking out.
