Lowswimmer - “In Five” (ft. S. Carey)
For those of you looking to take a swim inside of a dreamy and cinematic ocean of sound, grab your bathing suit and we’ll meet you “In Five.” This is the enchanting new single from Ed Tullett, aka Lowswimmer, and try as you might, it’s so deep that you’ll never reach the bottom.
“In Five” begins with the faint sounds of an orchestral synth before being joined by the keys of a piano. The reverb is reasonably thick, and the mood is immediately familiar if you’ve been keeping up with any of Lowswimmer’s work, solo or collaborative. The vocals enter and they are smooth and delicate and perfect for fans of Novo Amor, Bon Iver, or Aqualung. This kind of music falls comfortably into singer-songwriter or indie folk, but we truly feel that it deserves its own genre.
The lyrics of this slow burner describe the demise of a partnership and read as a love letter of resignation, unraveling into the eventual acceptance that some things are just not meant to be. On “In Five,” Lowswimmer is joined vocally by S. Carey, commonly recognized as the drummer and backing vocalist for Bon Iver. The two voices blend together very well here, with their harmonies adding an additional dimension to the soundscape– it is like listening underwater, while also floating through space.
“In Five” is divided into three sections, each separated by an elevation in the production. The crescendo is very gradual, but massive as all hell, like a wave that slowly engulfs your entire existence. This is only the second time that we’ve featured Lowswimmer on the blog, but if he keeps making music like “In Five,” we can assure you that it will not be the last. Luckily, his LP, Red Eye Effect, is already approaching on the horizon.
