Berlin-based singer-songwriter Lotta St Joan returns to our blog with “Always,” the second single from her upcoming record, Song for the Undecided.

We last heard from St Joan back in October, upon the release of her previous tune, “Between You and I,” a track with which we became enamored upon our first listen. We are pleased to say that “Always” is another folksy prize, guaranteed to win you over shortly after pressing the play button.

The song begins with some of the most exquisitely finger-plucked guitar sounds that you are ever going to hear. They provide a chill and introspective backdrop for the stripped-back nature of the arrangement, delicately carving a path for the arrival of St Joan’s vocal.

Her voice is exceptional and emotive in its delivery, likely causing all who hear to believe every word. The lyrics delve into the not-so-easy act of forgiving and the tortured heart that a grudge can often forge. There is a remarkable sliver of Joni Mitchell in her performance, and as the multiple layers of vocal harmonies arrive, prepare to be completely swept away.

For sonic depth and a bit of ear candy, a reverberating and ghostly slide guitar has been deployed, which only adds a glorious ambience to an already stellar production. If you’re looking for a hefty dose of moody introspection, look no further than Lotta St Joan’s “Always.”
