little luna - “fool”
Los Angeles-based little luna has just released the gloriously upbeat “fool.” The track is characterised by a smooth fusion of rock and pop that is reminiscent of later Fleetwood Mac.
“fool” opens to inviting acoustic and electric guitars that permeate a sense of mellow rhythmic texture, while a determined sense of momentum and drive is gained from the drums and bass. Across the top, layers of backing vocals provide us with the perfect opening hook to this ear-worm of a tune.
As the verses unfold, the layers peel back, allowing the addictively tight drum and bass partnership to take centre stage. Electric guitar delivers subtle hints of a weaving melody, but leaves ample amounts of space for the main vocal to breathe.
The track has an elegant sense of ebb and flow, playing with layers in a way that creates a thoughtful sense of movement and contrast. To herald in the chorus, layers are removed in order to expose the rhythmic textures of acoustic guitar. This creates an atmosphere of intimacy and tension. With the delivery of the first line of the chorus, the rest of the instruments spring into life, unleashing a satisfying, dynamic tidal wave onto the listener.
The vocals are strikingly passionate, setting alight the lyrics that rejoice in escape and individuality. Throughout the performance, lush harmonising layers offer support, infusing a richness and depth that, once again, harkens back to Fleetwood Mac.
“fool,” by little luna, is a great pop rock track that ticks all the boxes. The song is the latest single to be taken from the EP, the wildflower woman, which is now available everywhere.
