Linn Koch-Emmery - “Borderline Iconic”

Sweden-based singer-songwriter Linn Koch-Emmery returns to the blog with the energetic sounds of “Borderline Iconic,” the title track from her new LP.

After a subdued measure of a lo-fi assortment of sound, “Borderline Iconic” bursts to life with a full-band arrangement. Above the rhythmic concoction of bass, drums, and wailing guitars, Kock-Emmery’s vocal saturates the production with a breathy, emotive, and warmly over-driven delivery.

The track comes complete with an ear-worm refrain: “Tell me how you want it… Borderline iconic…” which we anticipate becoming permanently secured in the heads of all who listen. Juxtaposed with the often whispery vocal over the verses, the chorus hits its listener with a significant amount of energetic force, perfect to blast in your car as you drive away from all of life’s problems.

Between the syncopated beat of the verses and the relentless intensity of the chorus sections, listeners are rewarded with a fantastic dose of ebb and flow within this shoegaze-infused, indie-rock rollercoaster of sound. If you missed your second cup of coffee this morning, “Borderline Iconic” is the sonic equivalent of attaching jumper cables to your soul.

Speaking about the new LP and working with producer Pete Robertson, Koch-Emmery adds: “I’ve kept certain emotions at a distance both in my personal life and in my music and needed a degree of humor to approach what burns. It has been a way to talk about what hurts in a way where I feel more comfortable. Pete has both strengthened and intensified that part of my expression I’ve probably been most uncomfortable to show. It feels like a step towards my own mental boiling point.”
