Greta Pasqua - “Just Like You”
Writing a song about heartbreak is one thing, but making the song believable is something else entirely. Fortunately, there are artists like Greta Pasqua who take it upon themselves to find the best venues in which to host their pain– in this case, Pasqua chose to record her latest track, “Just Like You,” in an empty swimming pool.
It’s no secret that many modern artists record entire albums in their homes, and the number of songs that have been crafted in bathrooms might alarm you– even John Bonham was rumored to have recorded his drums in a stairwell, but never have we ever heard of any artist recording in an empty swimming pool. For this reason alone, Pasqua has earned a place on our blog, but it does not hurt that “Just Like You” is completely brilliant.
Swimming pool or no, this song sounds like it is being performed right next to you– if you have been paying attention, this is one of our most favorite aspects of the folk genre. To get lost in the music, we need to feel like we’re right there, and this song is no exception. The guitar is warm and vibrant, setting the melancholic tone for the vocal. And Pasqua’s voice is very raw as it elegantly delivers the lyrics to our ears.
However, where “Just Like You” completely excels is with its vocal harmonies. The track is quite sparsely recorded and there is simply nothing better for widening a production than layers upon layers of vocals. A careful listener is bound to hear some hints of Sharon Van Etten and Fiona Apple in Pasqua’s vocal, which, as far as we’re concerned, tips the scales in her favor. You’re going to be hard-pressed to find a more authentic song about heartbreak, so do yourself a favor and press play immediately.
