Joan & The Giants - “BEG”
Perth, Australia-based band Joan & The Giants have just released the superb indie rock track “BEG.” Written about unrequited love and heartbreak, the song ebbs and flows wonderfully with fuzzy guitar tones and passionate vocals.
“BEG” is a slow groover of an indie rock song. The melody is invitingly established by pulsing rhythm guitar and fuzzed-out lead. The interaction of the two guitars instantly provides the feeling of an anthem. Drums push the song forward with a slow, unfussy cadence whilst a rich, deep bass smoothly pads the song in warm tones.
Joan & The Giants expertly play with dynamics and layers on this song. The verses have a sense of space as the vocals take centre stage. Additional layers are added as the passion intensifies until they are allowed to erupt dreamily over the chorus sections. In a way, this ebb and flow underscores the highs and lows that are touched on in the lyrics.
The vocals are delivered with a striking sense of passion and authenticity. The performance quickly develops an emotional intensity without losing the underlying sweet tones. This control in the performance for me is what turns this song into an anthem.
Reflecting on the origins of the track, vocalist Grace Newton-Wordsworth shared, "‘BEG’ was written about a breaking point in my own relationship where we had two choices: either fight to make it work, or it’s over. You shouldn't have to beg for someone’s love, and this song is about those last moments when you really don’t want to walk away from the person you love most in this world, but everything in your body and soul is telling you, you might have to."
“BEG” is a truly inviting song that explores the turmoil of relationships and unrequited love. The fuzzy melodic tones and expressive vocals will leave you wanting more.
