Jaya Bremer - “My Expectations”

From Victoria, British Columbia, Jaya Bremer has just released the inspired dream pop track, “My Expectations.”

The song opens to arpeggiating synth tones that energetically flesh out the melody. The stripped-back vibe is dreamy, hypnotic and atmospheric, but strikingly contrasts the lyrics that weave through the rhythmic pulses. As the drums enter, creating a feeling of increasing complexity, the synth breaks into a staccato groove, providing a detached rhythmic sequence, which helps to build a sense of tension that draws you deeper into the composition. Warm synth pads airily fill out the spaces with ascending and descending tones, enhancing a feeling of reflection.

The highlight of the textural musical journey arrives at the powerful and moody crescendo. Here, the drums become more assertive as rhythm electric guitar creates a gritty, pulsing drive. Lead guitar layers infuse a distorted, visceral intensity of rebellion and defiance. This section is a real highlight. The vocal of Jaya Bremer has a Siouxsie Sioux vibe, just with a less intense, theatrical, and dramatic edge. This in no way lessens the impact of the gorgeously evocative delivery. Synthy harmonising backing layers are also deployed, adding a lush, mysterious edge to the performance.

Bremer wrote the song after witnessing the displacement of people’s integrity and character over the course of the pandemic: “I was observing and navigating a slow and steady shift in people close to me and feeling powerless to alter the trajectory they were on. Writing this song was an opportunity to make sense of the chaos I felt trying to maintain these relationships. It was a channel for my sadness and anger, and ultimately a lesson in acceptance that we can’t change people, and have to accept them as they are if it’s important enough to keep them in our lives. This song is everything I wanted to say face-to-face but didn’t know how to.”

My Expectations” is a truly captivating and atmospheric track, filled with interesting musical contrasts and heartfelt lyrics. This is definitely one you should check out.
