James Michael Rodgers - “Borderline”

UK-based James Michael Rodgers has just released the heartfelt, indie folk anthem “Borderline.” The song explores the issues that can be faced when battling mental illness and seeking healing and comfort amidst life’s trials.

Borderline” opens to warm, inviting acoustic guitar that has a lush, rustic feel. Bass provides a solid foundation to the track as it gently pads the arrangement. As the song progresses, more layers are added, helping to grow the dynamics. Percussion adds forward momentum and a sense of texture, whilst harmonica and violin give the track a traditional feel, making me think of John Martyn.

Borderline” gorgeously plays with contrast moving between intimate and reflective moments where the lyrics and vocal take centre stage to burst of joyful rousing energy. Rodgers’ vocal performance, in places, reminds me of Van Morrison with subtle hints of Lou Reed. The performance is expressive, passionate, and has a great sense of infectious energy. The backing vocals that join over the chorus have a great rousing communal feel, as if they are being performed in a warm, cosy pub.

Rodgers reflects on the song’s significance, saying, “Despite “Borderline“ having only three chords, I believe it's the most important song I've ever written. It's a song that resonates with anyone seeking healing, embracing their journey, and hoping to find serenity within themselves. It's about trusting the path that only you can walk.”

Borderline” is a modern indie folk anthem about resilience and triumph over adversity. It has a gorgeous, rousing spirit, despite the serious topics that are explored in the lyrics.
