Jake Simmons - “Them and Them and Us Again”
Jake Simmons from Kalamazoo, MI, USA, has impressed me with his new song “Them and Them and Us Again.” For me, this is a classic indie rock anthem. It showcases the songwriting and musical prowess of Simmons in a 4 minute, 44 second package. The leisurely guitar riff that starts the song sets a laid-back tone for this slow burner. And the addition of stabbing electric piano and slow grooving rock drums add a nice dynamic contrast. The vocals are strong and emotive, backed up by great backing vocals that add depth to the lyrics. The rock guitar solo gives the song a hint of the 1970s, and it is a great addition to the song, especially considering everyone seems afraid to do them because the Spotify Gods want shorter songs. I, for one, am glad that Jake prays to his own Rock Gods. I also like how the song dies back on the verses and explodes on the chorus sections; it keeps the listener engaged. The heavy guitar chords give the song some real weight and power. The closing section is the icing on the anthem cake and it reaffirms that classic rock n roll vibe. Overall, “Them and Them and Us Again” is a well-crafted and enjoyable track.
The artist says about the song: “Lyrically, this song is about the relationships we lose to political and social differences as we get older. Musically, this song is about me liking loud music with rippin’ ass guitars. A friend called it Weezer dipped in BBQ sauce.” “Them and Them and Us Again” comes from Simmons’ latest collection of songs, entitled My American Dream.
