Carver Commodore - “If Nothing Happens”

The American band Carver Commodore have released their latest single, “If Nothing Happens,” a throbbing and pounding song that examines the misgivings about pursuing a musical career. It vibrantly incorporates influences from Britpop, garage rock, and good, old-fashioned 1960s psychedelia.

Pressing play will ensure that the drums immediately capture your attention and Carver Commodore have guaranteed you’re battered black and blue by their addictively good hook. The song also has a solid foundation provided by a hefty, deep bass. As the song progresses, the group exhibits a more sophisticated, pop-leaning tendency. The masterfully produced guitar work in “If Nothing Happens” brings to mind 1990s Britpop. The jangly electric lead guitar arpeggiates and dances, whilst, in other sections, rhythm guitar lends a Graham CoxonBlur” vibe.

The choruses are where the band really hit home those great, old-fashioned pop tones with carefree and effortless falsetto vocals. The whole performance is catchy and one hell of an ear worm. In this section, bright acoustic guitar texture is added, enhancing the energetic and happy vibe. Towards the end of the song, backing vocals are added to the chorus, which produces a sense of spaciousness and also a slight psychedelic tinge. It makes me think of late ‘60s Beach Boys; however, Carver Commodore have struck a good balance, giving us hints of psych but not to the extent that we think they have sand underneath their feet when playing piano.

The song ends with a gorgeous acoustic section. The once pounding energy is pleasingly contrasted with this quiet and contemplative outro, which gives the listener a sense of finality and introspection. It is a really nice touch. The lyrics have a strong connection to the band’s five-year journey, which has included highs and lows, dealing with changes in their personal lives, and contemplating if a career in music is actually realistic. The band’s brave and cathartic exposition of these worries in “If Nothing Happens” ultimately demonstrates their tenacity in overcoming their fears and uncertainty.

Carver Commodore’s “If Nothing Happens” is just a superb, old-fashioned indie pop/rock song that combines the roughness of garage rock with the elegant and charming melodies of Britpop– definitely one to check out!
