Hannah Wyatt - “i don’t wanna see you on new year’s eve”
After the world has been completely ravished by Christmas music, a saving grace is found in Hannah Wyatt. Today, she brings her dark, Americana craft to our blog in the form of the gritty, melancholic sounds of “i don’t wanna see you on new year’s eve.”
This Washington-based artist first won us over back in July, upon the release of her underground EP, a body of work full of rich, authentic folk vibes to which we often find ourselves returning. We are therefore very pleased to inform you that she’s maintained that same level of stripped-back intimacy in this new release, which is guaranteed to instantly burrow its way into your heart, particularly if you find yourself apathetic and alone on New Year’s.
From the initial, lo-fi notes of an acoustic guitar, to the first glimpse at Wyatt’s vocal, “i don’t wanna see you on new year’s eve” perfectly encompasses the musical aspects that made us start a blog in the first place. With its gently brushed percussion, it is not at all difficult to imagine this song being performed on the dark and dusty stage of some forgotten speakeasy, as though Wyatt has looked into your soul and fashioned you a tune.
The production is distinctly analogue, with glorious swells of slide guitar provided by Tim Mechling, dancing throughout the soundscape with Wyatt’s moody string arrangement. Among these fantastic treats of ear candy, your ears will be filled with some spectacular layers of vocals on the final refrain. In the track’s two minute duration, Wyatt exquisitely delivers a tune that is sure to gain more momentum with each passing year.
