Holy Fool - “Ache”
Glasgow/London duo Holy Fool have just released the superb indie pop rock track “Ache.”
“Ache” exudes the sounds of an instant indie classic, with a lush 1990s vibe. Opening to a relaxed drum groove, the track has an irresistible unfussy swagger. Underneath, bass heightens the sense of sway as it pulses warmly and deeply. There is a genuinely captivating sense of movement. Over the top, the two electric guitar layers weave a gritty and shimmering tapestry, helping to consolidate the classic anthemic vibes.
A real highlight of the track consists of the little dashes of ear candy and intrigue; whistling, shouts, and feedback are scattered throughout the composition. The song is also full of great musical builds that endow a feeling of tension and release. Here, the drums pulse intensely, setting the guitars up for their musical hook.
The vocal delivery is characterised by a great, laid back and nonchalant vibe, which makes me want to draw comparisons to Beck. The cool performance really sets the track alight. Lyrically, “Ache” explores the idea of being so deeply in love that it drives you to your breaking point. It is, in essence, walking the path of all great indie rock anthems by being an unconventional love ballad.
“Ache” serves as a great appetizer for Holy Fool’s debut album, which will be released later this year.
