Massachusetts-based singer-songwriter Hayley Reardon returns to the blog with “Until It Happens,” a melancholic journey through anguish and loss.

Reardon describes “Until It Happens” as “a meditation on the ache of impermanence.” And if you’ve ever read a single page of our blog, you’ll know that loss and grief are definitely within our wheelhouse. The song opens with a vintage-tinged bass that rides a slow, sparse rhythm, as tones from an organ pad the arrangement with a somber ambience.

Reardon’s breathy vocal performance soon arrives, bringing with it all the emotional honesty that made us fans of hers in the first place. As with all of her work, there is not a single hint of digital manipulation– it’s just her voice and a microphone, which always allows the listener to trust her words completely, in all of their raw and authentic glory.

The subdued strumming of an acoustic guitar gradually fades into the production like a slow, mellifluous tide that comes in to wash across the shore. Reardon has also deployed subtle vocal layering at key moments, bringing a lovely width to the sound and providing some delightful servings of ear candy. The end of “Until It Happens” dissolves into a fantastic marriage of acoustic guitar and pedal steel, leaving listeners no choice but to return to the play button, again and again.

We have long been fans of Reardon’s craft. From her solo work and adventures in collaboration, to the warm and intimate performances that she often posts on social media, we are thoroughly convinced that her authenticity will bring her much success– “Until It Happens” is only further evidence of that.
