Hayfitz - “Curl”
Los Angeles-raised, Berlin-based singer-songwriter Hayfitz makes his way back onto our blog with the dreamy and cinematic folk vibes of “Curl.” This is the third time we’ve featured his work and once you’ve pressed play, you will understand why.
Atop of the ethereal tones of an ambient synth, an acoustic guitar is delicately plucked, revealing a remarkably chill soundscape. The attention to sonic detail reveals the tell-tale signs that this is the work of Hayfitz. And upon the arrival of his emotionally honest vocal, this assumption is confirmed.
If you’ve never before heard this man sing, prepare yourself for a delicately emotive upper register that primarily resides in a falsetto. It is difficult to discern what has been utilized here as percussion, but it is present just the same, adding bits of texture to pleasantly push the song forward in a graceful glide.
“Curl” should appeal to fans of Bon Iver and Thom Yorke alike, as it manages to remain completely raw for its duration, yet also offers the ears a somewhat experimental production. It comes complete with multiple lifts, which delightfully elevate the refrain, acting as waves of emotion that shall wash over you with each listen.
And if you happen to have a playlist full of songs that assist in your moments of introspection and/ or reflection, “Curl” would be the perfect addition. It is impossible to press play and not let it guide you away from all the mundanity of the daily grind or any of the other perils that come along with being human.
