Connie Cunningham and the Creeps - “Going, Going, Going, Gone”
Connie Cunningham and the Creeps’ debut single, “Going, Going, Going, Gone,” is a delightful throwback to the 1960s in every sense of the word. It is so vintage you can see the black and white television sets and kids dressed in suits with narrow leg bottoms. This is the sound of music before The Beatles changed the landscape. The song starts with backwards sounds and a throbbing bass. The drumming is addictively simple. The whole rhythm section has that feel of a classic Phil Spector record. The guitar tones are clean and classic.
The girl group harmonies are one of the many perfect touches to this record… It brings a sense of familiarity to the song with the “oh yeah yeah” lines. They beautifully back the main male vocal, which is crooning and honey-like. The vocal is not super polished and has a healthy drenching of reverb, which adds to the vintage feel of the song.
Despite the throwback feel, there is a modern element to the track, which may be attributed to the recurring backwards noises or “backmasking.” The combination of old and new elements creates a unique listening experience that is both timeless and fresh.
“Going, Going, Going, Gone” is an impressive debut single from Connie Cunningham and the Creeps. The song is beautifully arranged and, from the first play, is memorable like every good pop song… especially the ones from that great decade of the 1960s.
