GIMMY - “Fall On Me”

We have been following the work of Australia-based singer-songwriter Gemma Owens and her project GIMMY since the release of “Tell Me I’m Your Girl.” Today, she is back on the blog with “Fall On Me,” a song that emphasizes the importance of friendship in the midst of chaos.

This one gets started with a lo-fi duet of softly strummed acoustic guitar and the delightfully soft melody from a lead. The production is instantly enchanting, sounding as though it is being performed right beside you– one of our favorite vibes when it comes to raw and heartfelt recordings.

Owens’ vocal performance falls into place and we are truly mesmerized by the way that she glides into her falsetto at the tale end of each lyrical line. Even as her voice fills out the gaps in the arrangement, “Fall On Me” never loses its intimate resonance, which will likely be one of the reasons you return to it.

All of this changes upon the arrival of the chorus, with the emergence of the rhythm section and a vocal hook that will have you singing along in no time at all. This sudden sonic shift from the more stripped-back opening provides listeners with a substantial dose of dynamic variation– this ebb and flow is one of the reasons we cannot stop listening to the track.

Another serving of mellifluous fluctuation arrives with the middle eight– GIMMY definitely knows how to write a song. Ear candy has been provided by way of layered auxiliary vocals and a vibey guitar solo that flows into a final, quiet verse and chorus combo that simply exudes raw emotion.

About “Fall On Me,“ Owens adds: “It’s exhausting to try and keep a happy face all the time when that’s just not the reality of being a human. This track promotes real emotions and talking to your mates. I really don’t believe humans are meant to feel isolated and alone, I hope the song brings a sense of unity about the struggles of vulnerability in friendship and the desire we all have to feel loved.”

The track comes from the forthcoming album, Things Look Different Now, due for release on May 31st via Third Eye Stimuli Records.
