Gia Ransome - “Buttercup”
From Australia, singer-songwriter Gia Ransome appears on our blog with the dark and turbulent sounds of “Buttercup.”
After a quick four count, “Buttercup” is brought to life as though the theme song from a Quentin Tarantino film. It beholds a gritty darkness, punctuated by an upbeat rhythm and a menacing lead guitar designed to immediately mesmerize the listener. The track is psychedelically-tinged and would sound amazing blasting from the stage at any number of summer music festivals.
However, where “Buttercup” has completely won us over is with Ransome’s vocal performance. She brings a vibe that is reminiscent of both Lana Del Rey and Goldfrapp, allowing her voice to cast a spell over listeners as it glides through the arrangement via an over-driven, jazz-imbued delivery. Highlights include the backing vocal layers on the refrain that conjure a sweet, 1960s-era production.
About “Buttercup,” Ransome adds that it “…is about love that’s more like an obsession, with someone who isn’t good for you. I think when a relationship is really passionate it can distract from some really unhealthy dynamics, and make you look past things that would normally be a dealbreaker. This song’s an expression of that turbulence.”
