Fast Romantics - “Fuck Yourself”

Toronto-based Fast Romantics have just released the summer anthem, “Fuck Yourself,” a grooving, wild ride that packs one hell of a chorus that will definitely have you singing along.

The song begins with an intro that foreshadows the big, bold chorus. Energetic drums and shimmering synths get you settled in before breaking into the stripped-back groove of the first verse. The rhythm of the drums and the funky bass give these sections a real sweet movement and swagger. This is only enhanced by the charming touches of electric guitar. You will want to move.

When the first chorus hits, you have that satisfying feeling of having lived with this song all your life. This an anthem and there is no other way to describe it. One of the highlights is the dynamic break. Piano adds a great, vintage texture whilst atmospheric backing vocals enhance the emotion behind the lyrics. I am picking up hints of solo Scott Walker in this section. The Fast Romantics then finally give the song the ending we all knew was coming, with a big crescendo.

The group says: “Every Fast Romantics record has some kind of anthem on it, and I think “Fuck Yourself” is that song this time around. This started out as a song about a very specific person, but as I wrote, it kept shapeshifting into being about a whole spectrum of human dumpster fires. By the end -- as so often happens -- the target turned out to be myself. Now that it’s finished, your guess is as good as mine as to who it’s really about, but it feels really fucking good to sing and that’s all that matters to me.”

This is a song that fits so many occasions perfectly and I really like how the song’s meaning can be attached to anyone or anything, depending on who the listener is. The Fast Romantics have knocked it out of the park. Be sure to check out their new full-length record, Happiness + Euphoria, coming out Sept 29th.
