Freyr - “Night and Day”

Scandinavian alternative folk artist Freyr appears on our blog with his new single, “Night and Day,” a heartfelt, folksy number guaranteed to find its way into your heart, where it will remain with you forever.

Unlike most of the folk songs that we feature on the blog, this one begins with a full arrangement, including a retro-toned guitar, bass, and drums– if you’re not tapping your foot after the first five seconds, then something is terribly wrong with you. But where Freyr really won us over is in the vocal department. His voice has that familiarity to it that you can’t quite place, yet you continue to listen because you believe it’s a new song from one of your favorite artists. And, as it turns out, it is (see what we did there?).

Now that we’re all Freyr fans, let’s talk about how gently this melody flows right through to your soul. While you try to determine whether or not he’s doubled his vocal, the harmonies begin to arrive, turning an already great song into something even greater. This track has one of those late ‘50s vibes underscoring it, thanks to some carefully placed backing vocals, but it also has all the prerequisites of modern music. As we’ve said countless times before, we cannot say no to a song with a timeless production.

Night and Day” is reasonably consistent with its arrangement for most of the duration, but dials it down at the three-minute point, resulting in an elegantly stripped-back dynamic break. This allows the track to crescendo up into its finale, and the overall feel-good vibe and musicianship will likely have you returning to the play button again and again.
