Canadian artist Dover Lynn Fox brings her indie-pop craft back to the blog with “Phantom Lover,” a song that searches for catharsis beyond heartache.

Phantom Lover” opens to the soothing tones of distant yet warmly melancholic piano. Airy synths delicately pad the arrangement, growing in intensity, helping to draw the listener into the composition. As the song gets into its stride, drums push the arrangement forward at a steady cadence as bass comfortingly pulses. Acoustic guitar adds a rich sense of texture whilst beautifully punctuating the groove, with elegant horn layers introduced at the song’s conclusion.

The vocals are the real star of the show on this track, especially at the choruses. The vocal is filled with an authentic and commanding sense of passion that effortlessly sets the track alight. The expressive performance is layered with some beautiful, harmonising layers that lend a striking sense of emotional depth to the lyrics.

Of the single, Fox says “‘Phantom Lover‘ was written during a time of change, and at the end of a significant relationship. It draws from a variety of voices; those real, those imagined, from both past and present. These voices are messengers, calling and stirring you to persevere, embrace your dreams and your identity in the face of adversity and change”

Phantom Lover” is a beautiful exploration of heartbreak and renewal with immersive layers and poignant lyrics. The track is taken from Dover Lynn Fox’s upcoming EP, Low Moon, set to release in May this year.
