Liam Fender - “Don't Follow Me Down”

Liam Fender’s latest single, “Don't Follow Me Down,” is a powerful track that offers a blend of uplifting arrangements, synths, and engaging melancholy. The song starts off with Liam’s distinctive vocals, which are rich and smoky… There is a caramel like tone with a baritone depth that adds a layer of warmth to the track. The synths and electronic drum beat create a distinctive starting soundscape before being replaced with guitar, mellotron, and real drums.

As the song progresses, it gradually builds in intensity and momentum, exploding midway into an anthemic section that is filled with soaring “ohs” and uplifting energy. The lead guitar work adds a touch of what I would describe as Fleetwood Mac sounds from the Rumours album. There are also some jangly tones that also make me think of the band The La’s… this evokes a sense of nostalgia and familiarity within the song.

Lyrically, “Don't Follow Me Down” is a powerful exploration of the struggle that many of us face on a daily basis. The song deals with the idea of wearing a mask to disguise the torment within, feeling stuck in a rut, and misreading people in a state of paranoia. However, through friendship and the ability to open up, you discover that the dark reality you’ve created is far from the truth. This, in combination with the music, makes sure the song has included all the key ingredients to good old fashioned indie music– melancholy, with a sense that things will get better.

The music video, shot in Liam’s hometown of North Shields on Tynemouth beach, further enhances the lyrical content and dreams people have of escape. The visuals are subtle yet powerful.

Overall, Liam Fender’s “Don't Follow Me Down” is a beautiful track with a tasteful blend of sounds and styles.
