Robert Kretzschmar - “Do Me A Favour”
German artist Robert Kretzschmar has just released “Do Me A Favour,” a song full of intriguing melodies and another strong indicator that his solo debut album, penned for release this autumn, will be one not to miss.
The song’s standout feature is its use of synths. A retro sounding synth is used subtly to pad the song, while another delivers an unexpected and unpredictable melody. This lead synth sounds like some of the notes have been reversed and are playing backwards. This not only creates intrigue, but also brings weight to the lyrics of the song by indicating that something isn’t quite right.
I really like Kretzschmar’s attention to detail as the arrangement is really stripped-back, yet everything sits perfectly within the song. Acoustic guitar is the main musical texture throughout, giving warm tones while the drums provide a nice, steady groove. The warm bass line locks nicely with this drum groove and I was bopping my head whilst listening and writing this review. Electric guitar is used sparingly, providing shimmering chords over the arrangement.
The vocal performance is delicate and intimate. The lyrics are recited in a storytelling fashion. Backing vocals are used sparingly, but they also add an enjoyable unusual texture to the arrangement.
The song explores heartbreak and relationships. The relatable feeling that sometimes you want the whole experience to end, but those words sometimes are not said. Robert Kretzschmar’s “Do Me A Favour” is another unique and beautiful composition from his forthcoming album that blends great sonic textures with storytelling lyrics. The track is well crafted and gorgeously stripped-back.
