Devarrow - “Something About Getting Old”

Upon the release of his new album, A Long & Distant Wave, Nova Scotia-based Graham Ereaux, aka Devarrow, has just sent us the freshly baked single: “Something About Getting Old.”

Devarrow gets things started with the lo-fi and intimate sounds of an acoustic guitar, pleasantly strummed in a manner that brings a rather upbeat vibe to one of life’s unavoidable outcomes: getting old. It is not long before his vocal appears, wonderfully displayed in a double-tracked falsetto, instantly enchanting anyone close enough to hear.

Just past the thirty second mark, your ears shall be filled with the glorious vintage sounds of a 1960s-inspired rhythm section, complete with steady drums, creamy bass, and the flavorful keys of a piano. All of these elements combine to ensure that the message remains one of positivity and hope, adding a bit of bounce as we all eventually wave goodbye to our younger selves.

Something About Getting Old” comes filled to its tippy top with spirited moments of variation, each of them bound to have you returning for multiple listens. From the exquisite sounds of subtle vocal harmonies, to the elaborate elevation of a dynamic shift akin to The Beatles and/ or Fleet Foxes, this song has been crafted into complete perfection.

Devarrow has delved into a subject matter that will resonate with all listeners, at one point or another, and that is the inevitability of aging, along with “the bittersweet acceptance of life's changes.” And if we are to be reminded of our own mortality, let it come by way of these sweet, folksy numbers, provided Devarrow keeps writing them for us.
