Mark Stoney + The Denizen Hum - “The Chase” (ft. Jade Castrinos)
After we featured “Half Made” back in November, Mark Stoney swore that The Denizen Hum would return. Today, he makes good on that promise with the release of “The Chase”– and he brought some friends with him, including Danny Reisch (Local Natives) and Jade Castrinos (Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros).
This is what’s going to happen: you’re going to press play on “The Chase” and immediately imagine it as part of a film’s soundtrack. This track begins slowly, full of two of our most favorite qualities: darkness and grittiness. It would be nearly impossible not to hear it being played over images that depict the fall of some fictional hero. Stoney’s vocals glide across the top of the music, at first in the same manner that Pink Floyd utilized on their greatest work– it is delicate and ethereal and perfectly suited for this kind of atmosphere; however, when he eases into his upper register, this comparison disperses into more of a modern delivery.
Once Stoney is accompanied by Castrinos’ harmonies on the second verse, the resulting effect is quite magical, as though their voices were made for this song– for each other– and with the addition of the percussion, “The Chase” becomes an unstoppable force. The song then enters its grand crescendo, with the emotion fully saturating the vocals as the entire production rises to its glory before ultimately resolving into its raw and sparsely recorded conclusion. This song is going to completely blow you away.
