Demeter - “While You’re Gone”

From Brooklyn, indie rock band Demeter have just released the lush “While You’re Gone.” The track is brimmed full of contrasts and tinged elegantly with retro, psychedelic elements.

While You’re Gone” opens reflectively to the warm tones of an electric rhythm guitar. As the song finds its stride, gentle electric piano enhances this mood, while a percussive beat and rich bass lock in the track’s slow, swaggering groove.

The track is exquisitely full of contrasts. Its chilled, intimate verses have a fun, eccentric vibe and build into waves of intensity. In these moments, the drums thrash whilst the electric guitar layers are given room to breathe. With each wave, these layers become more powerful and notably more psychedelic in tone. By the track’s crescendo, the vibes are strikingly moody and menacing.

The vocal performance is delightfully relaxed and almost conversational in tone. It is the backing vocals that are the real highlight, wonderfully rising and falling, creating a pleasing hook. The lyrics to “While You’re Gone” are charmingly mundane, but enjoyably vivid.

While You’re Gone” is a splendid indie rock song that has a pleasing feeling of familiarity. The song would make the perfect addition to any music lover’s playlist.
