Deadbeat Girl - “She Loves Me”
Valentina Olson, aka Deadbeat Girl, is a 19-year-old independent singer/songwriter from NYC. She has just released the achingly beautiful song, “She Loves Me.”
She made her debut earlier this year, with her first track, "Another Day," drawing inspiration from grunge and alt rock, but “She Loves Me” is definitely not grunge. With this track, Olson's songwriting is stripped down into an indie-folk style that is pure and emotional. Olson finds captivating vulnerability and resonant honesty in this contemplative and profoundly moving performance. Accompanied by soothing banjo, beautiful acoustic guitar licks, and the occasional electric piano chord, the music holds a sincerely reflective quality. The fact that this is only her second release also blows me away! The vocal delivery gets off to a very modest start and maintains a genuine and sorrowful tone. The vocal range and emotion of Olsen gradually unfolds into something that feels like a pure, truthful confession– one that is both full of sadness, yet performed very beautifully. Olsen’s lyrics tell the tale of yearning for a lover and “She Loves Me” will deeply resonate with those who have ever felt shattered, hurt, and deserted.
Olson says: "The song is about being in a relationship with someone who doesn’t treat you well but letting them break you down because they are so 'lovely'. The verses explore all the person’s wrongdoings in the relationship… but… letting that person destroy you because you are still infatuated with them. This song is easily my most vulnerable yet… I want people to feel seen and be able find comfort in vulnerability during times of hardship.”
