Dead in Love - “Gone With Stupid”

With their brand-new single, “Gone With Stupid,” the Gothenburg, Sweden-based alternative, minimalistic lofi duo Dead In Love have delivered a minimalist earworm of a song. The song opens with a gritty beat that makes me think of Iggy and the Stooges' “Down on the Street.” But there are no “Urgh” sounds from Iggy; this one feels more like some kind of twisted holy chant. Jennifer's vocal performance is evocative of Karen O, but Arthur's vocals are more BRMC-influenced for me. The two create a really lovely mood. The backing vocals of Jennifer give the song a psychedelic tinge. This is definitely a stripped back banger from the moment it starts playing.

Musically, the foot-pounding beat driven by an unrelenting kick gives the song a gorgeous pulse. The groove is only developed with the tambourine and snare combination over the main sections, and a shaker on the odd verse to give a bit of movement. The song’s guitars are lush and gritty; they are not heavily reverberated or delayed; they’re not growling or jangly– they just serve you your next double whisky at the bar and make sure that there is no ice, water, or Coca-Cola being served with it. This is classic alt rock and it is exactly what I am after.
