Daniel Trakell - “Still”
Melbourne-based singer-songwriter Daniel Trakell has been a recurring motif on our blog, steadily releasing singles from his sophomore LP, Into the Blue. Today, he returns to us once again with the magnificently stripped-back sounds of another single: “Still.”
This is the opening track of his new record, and we’re pleased to say that it holds up to the pressure of making a lasting impression. Some deep bass notes support the gentle strums of an acoustic guitar, as distant swells from a lap steel permeate the track’s atmosphere. Within the first few seconds of “Still,” it is quite clear that time and care went into its production, creating a vibrant and chill foundation for Trakell’s glorious storytelling.
One of the qualities that led to us being such big fans of Trakell’s work is the way that his vocal is warmly redolent of our favorite songwriters. Careful listeners will pick up remnants of George Harrison, John Lennon, and Elliott Smith, and it is impossible not to get lost in his authentic manner of delivering the lyrics to your ears.
A steady beat soon arrives to provide some forward momentum and listeners shall become enchanted by the fantastic layering of backing vocals over the chorus sections. A major highlight here is the dynamic break that brings the sound of lap steel to the foreground before dissolving into a final refrain.
Upon hearing “Still,” we are confident that you’ll want to hear the rest of the record, so we’re going to make it every easy for you:
