CVC - “Sophie”
“Sophie,” by CVC, has a pretty fantastic vibe from the early 1970s, giving, for me, really strong nods to ELO. The song begins simply with piano before escalating into an epic, slow and grooving anthem. The piano is ever present and, again, very reminiscent of ELO, with its really lovely vintage sound.
The melodic lyrics have a contagious appeal– particularly the “oh la la” passages. The bass is constantly pulsing and, accompanied with the drums, you can’t help but move your head. This tune features some extremely great guitar work. A genuine rising quality is produced by the understated slide guitar, gliding along in the background. It is heavily reverberated and lends a real dreamy quality. The lead guitar solo also soars and surprisingly develops into a genuinely skilled demonstration of very intricate work. This is a really good song and I love how it relentlessly grows sonically and continuously hammers home all these vintage tones that we’ve all come to know and love.
Of the latest single, the band say, "[Sophie] is a love letter to Nanial's wonderful girlfriend, and about how she can sing; the whole sing, and nothing but the sing - but won't sing in front of the band” adding, “the closest we ever got was the spoken-word intro she gave us for this tune."
