Craig Benedict Valentine Badynee
Chicago-based Craig Benedict Valentine Badynee has just released the retro tinged indie rock track, “The New Richter Waltz.” The song is filled with nostalgic, catchy melodies and a sweet, cinematic ambience that is reminiscent of Jarvis Cocker’s solo work. This is not surprising, though, when you look at the refined list of artists that inspire Badynee, from Gainsbourg & Birkin to Alan Hull.
“The New Richter Waltz” is founded on the retro tones of electric guitar that shift from a reflective, arpeggiated pattern to the textural layer of strummed chords, creating a pleasing sense of ebb and flow. The bass underneath acts as an enjoyable melodic counterpoint, with sweet rising and falling lines.
Drums inject a sense of energy with a steady, crisp groove and enjoyable creative flourishes and fills. All of these elements work together to create an infectious yet pleasingly laid-back groove, but the nostalgic gloss is beautifully imbued by the orchestral splashes across the composition. The touches of staccato horns and rich strings enrich the palette whilst accentuating key moments.
The vocal of Badynee has a narrative quality as it recites the wonderfully storytelling lyrics that touch on the tumultuous life of Rossa “Zazel” Richter, the first human cannonball. Over key areas, the delivery is filled with a pleasing dynamic expression and melodic phrasing that is really set alight by the backing vocals, adding dimension and emotional impact.
“The New Richter Waltz” is a delightfully layered composition full of memorable melodic moments. The track marks a very strong debut record for Badynee on Team Love Records. Once you press play, you won’t want to miss his future releases. Connect with Craig Benedict Valentine Badynee: Spotify | Bandcamp | Instagram
