Loewenhaupt, a review
After taking a break from music for ten years, Loewenhaupt is back with a solo project, an ambitious collection of songs entitled, Mitten win Anfang. The nine track album opens with “Du kannst alles erreichen” and, while I do not speak German, the call and response vocal delivery in the verses is reminiscent of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, a film which I recommend to anyone when the conversation shifts to musicals. While Loewenhaupt offered an English translation of the lyrics, I began this review before receiving them. Track 2, “Verspochen,” begins with some sweet lap steel that we are particularly fond of at UpToHear. While the track might sound like a love letter, make no mistake, this is a rock song, as one will hear in the chorus, which has the energy of any legit ‘90s banger, also a recurring theme throughout the Pixies-esque “Welt retten.” By the time “Ohne much” begins, the listener understands that Loewenhaupt did not necessarily take ten years off of music, but merely spent that time collecting the parts of life that would go into this record. Since I am a sucker for the slower, heartfelt jams, it was worth it to stick it out for the album’s closer, the piano-driven, hard-hitting “Für immer.” I am serious though, anyone who has seen Hedwig is going to love this. It is proof that music transcends the need to understand a language and is an easy listen at just under 30 minutes.
