Children of Indigo - “Yesterday”

Ottawa, Ontario-based Children of Indigo have recently released the beautiful indie folk track “Yesterday.” This track is founded around the clean, warm, and mellow tones of acoustic guitar. The gentle, laid-back strumming creates a beautiful atmosphere that feels well defined and highly contemplative.

As the song progresses, more layers are introduced to convey and enhance the growing sense of emotion. Reflective sounds gently pad the arrangement as the banjo begins to weave twangy tones, imparting a nostalgic and melancholic texture. A slow drum groove helps lend a gentle sense of forward momentum, as the bass pulses soothingly.

The breathy vocals are harmonious as they reflectively deliver the well-written lyrics. The performances of the female and male singers work exceptionally well, creating a rich depth of emotion. This feeling rises majestically at the track’s crescendo, providing a satisfying end.

Lyrically, the song explores the theme of life and the sense that sometimes we can lose our direction. Relationships deteriorate, circumstances shift, and we can find ourselves in the middle without answers. “Yesterday” is about overcoming these challenges, looking back to the past to determine how we should conduct ourselves going forward, and letting change happen naturally from within. The song also makes reference to the conflicts we can experience when someone else changes alongside us. Even if we yearn for the past, we have to learn when to let go of unfulfilled love.

Yesterday” is taken from Children of Indigo’s debut album, due out later this year.
