King Black Acid - “Caterpillar Queen”

King Black Acid's “Caterpillar Queen” is a good-old gritty/ cinematic indie rock/ pop anthem that takes you on a journey through a world of science gone mad. The song’s slow pulsing drum and bass line set the tone for this number, making you want to bop your head.

The vocals weave a tale full of character and personality. The singer’s elongated vowel sounds and shifting pitch give the impression that things are just a little “odd,” which perfectly suits the song’s lyrics. The backing vocals add a floating quality over the heavier rhythm.

The guitars, meanwhile, provide a solid indie rock backbone, with sharp stabs and traditional noodling tones. Over the chorus sections, a synth adds an extra layer of depth to the arrangement and a mellotron joins on the verses helping to pad out the sound.

Caterpillar Queen” doesn’t take itself too seriously– it is a rock pop song infused with a playful energy. For me, it is a strong start to their full-length album, The Rainbow Lodge, which is now available everywhere.
