Brook St - “Nothing To Lose”

From Australia’s Sunshine Coast, indie folk duo Hannah Olivia and Jason Daniels, aka Brook St, have completely won us over with their remarkably chill vibes and gloriously spacious harmonies via their new track, “Nothing To Lose.”

This song gets things started with the lo-fi sounds of a harmonica atop a raw display of acoustic guitar. There seems to be a gentle synth pad in the distance and when you add all of this together, you get a fantastic backdrop for the ensuing vocal performance.

Hannah’s voice is the first to appear, wonderfully reminiscent of Julien Baker, though not nearly as melancholic as she delivers a delicate message of hope. Her vocal seems to be perfectly double-tracked, which is one of our favorite aspects of indie folk, effortlessly rising and falling with emotional precision.

Jason emerges at the end of each verse with a warm harmony, immediately landing “Nothing To Lose” within our cozy niche– we find it increasingly difficult to resist a good male + female duet. And their voices blend together so perfectly that it comes as no surprise to learn that they are husband and wife.

There are quite a number of duets in our stack of submissions, but other collaborations can be less convincing. With “Nothing To Lose,” we have no evidence to suggest Hannah and Jason were not in the same room when recording the tune– it’s as though they are performing it right in front of you, which is one of the most significant traits we look for in a folk song.

The arrival of the rhythm section elevates the track to a new level of glory and we truly cannot get enough of all the “whoa oh oh” vocals here– another feature we wish more artists would utilize. “Nothing To Lose” is relatively short, at just past two and a half minutes, but the result is that it leaves you wanting more. And with that, we certainly hope that Hannah and Jason send us all of Brook St’s future releases.
