Bo Milli - “Chewing Gum”

Today marks the release of Making Friends, the brand new EP from Norwegian artist Emilie Østebø, aka Bo Milli. While we have already reviewed “Come After Me” and “I’m In,” we wanted to be sure and offer our two cents on “Chewing Gum.”

If you’re not already familiar with Bo Milli’s craft, pressing play on “Chewing Gum” is a fantastic introduction to her indie-pop sound. The song begins with an immediate ear worm, melodically provided by the most vibey of guitar tones. And if you haven’t already noticed your toes tapping, your mind is likely still completely enamored by the raw rhythm section, hammering down the track’s foundation in all of its lo-fi glory.

It is not long before your ears are filled with Bo Milli’s voice, which is how she won us over in the first place. We generally turn away bedroom-pop submissions that do not hit our Soccer Mommy/ Clairo niche, but listeners will be pleased to know that “Chewing Gum” checks off all of our boxes (and even adds some additional boxes, then checks off all of those as well). We are completely convinced that Bo Milli is going to blow up, if blowing up is still a thing that artists do...

Chewing Gum” follows the time-tested formula of a bass/ drums verse and a refrain that cranks the distortion. And although we do not have a set list, it is not difficult to imagine this track opening every set of Bo Milli’s upcoming tour. It immediately grabs the attention of all who hear, then hits them with a ton of over-driven bricks. Filled to its brim with guitar-induced ear candy, “Chewing Gum“ is another winner for Bo Milli’s stack.
