Bad Flamingo - “Numb”
Upon the release of “Numb,” Bad Flamingo have now appeared on our blog a total of ten times. And while this is more than any other artist, we still do not know a single thing about them.
Bedecked in masks and cloaked with anonymity, the duo chooses to let their music tell you everything you need to know about them. Pressing play on “Numb” invites you directly onto the Bad Flamingo plane of existence, with a dark and gritty ambience imbued with twangy guitars and bewitching vocals.
The track is built around a lo-fi acoustic guitar performance, adorned in a washboard percussion to give it that Bad Flamingo signature flair. Breathy and seductive vocals strut themselves throughout the verses, instilling a sonic aesthetic equivalent to gunpowder and whiskey.
In true Bad Flamingo form, additional layers of vocals decorate “Numb” as it gently crescendos over its course. An unembellished beat is deployed in conjunction with the bass line, which brings a significant amount of rhythmic weight to the otherwise sparsely arranged composition.
To shake things up a bit, the second chorus is followed by a dark and mystifying dynamic shift, which offers more than enough variation to keep you coming back to “Numb” for multiple listens. And although the track is barely over two minutes in length, that is more than enough time for the duo to sink their claws into you.
