Babe Club - “Middle of Nowhere”
Charleston, South Carolina-based Babe Club arrive on our blog with their signature ‘cool-toned synth pop’ via their new release, “Middle of Nowhere.”
The track begins with some lo-fi vibes of a confidently strummed acoustic guitar, complete with a slight tape-warbling effect. It is immediately enchanting and we suddenly find ourselves wanting much more of it. The vocals appear, double-tracked to perfection and reminiscent of both Clairo and Julien Baker as they delve into longing for who you used to be, even if that means going nowhere in particular.
A reverberating electric guitar emerges to deliver some ear candy and we are swept away in the resulting ethereal and dreamlike atmosphere. Deep bass is deployed to add weight to the production, gradually and naturally causing the song to crescendo, like a giant flood of fond memories that arrive exactly when you need them. Synths begin to churn and swirl as the beat arrives, offering listeners a chance to escape from the world, even if only for three minutes and twenty-two seconds.
“Middle of Nowhere” is host to a cornucopia of dynamic fluctuation, adding and removing elements so that the arrangement breathes as though a living organism. The middle of the song, for instance, brings a moment as vulnerable and stripped-back as the intro, prompting what feels like a private conversation between you and Babe Club. The second half of the track reveals more of a robust sound that saturates every last square inch of the sonic space, leaving us to marvel at the glorious journey that “Middle of Nowhere” invites us to experience.
This is our first time hearing from Babe Club, but if they keep making songs like “Middle of Nowhere,” it’s safe to say that this will not be the last time we feature them on the blog.
