Andie Mechanic - “Clinton”

Singer-songwriter Andie Mechanic arrives on the blog with her latest release, “Clinton,” in which “intimate, indie songwriting meets nightmare.”

When we first heard “Clinton,” we marveled at the way Mechanic had incorporated glitchy production choices, intermingled with an otherwise acoustically-driven song. This is first evident just as the vocals begin, when the ghostly orchestra cuts out abruptly to reveal her soft voice. Regardless of the subject matter, the melody is very soothing and instantly reminiscent of some of our current favorite artists, including Phoebe Bridgers and Julien Baker.

When the song approaches the one-minute point, the artifacts become more prevalent as the sound starts to crescendo– it is quite the magnificent risk to take, if we do say so ourselves. Some bass joins the production, leading to a much thicker second verse as keys start to move from the background to the foreground. “Clinton takes a dramatic turn, at 90 seconds in, cranking the distortion on the vocals and incorporating harmonies at the most perfect of times. It is such a cinematic experience that listeners may not, at first, notice the very minimal percussion. The song concludes by retreating back into its former acoustic self.

After hearing “Clinton,” we hope that Andie Mechanic continues making these production choices and we cannot wait to see what she comes up with next. Until then, “Clinton” is available everywhere you get your music.
