Ally Palmer - “Apple Of My Eye”

For those of you looking for some retro-tinged blue-eyed soul, feast your ears upon “Apple Of My Eye,” the latest single from Byron Bay-based Ally Palmer.

Apple Of My Eye” does not waste anyone’s time, hitting your ears with Palmer’s soulful vocal performance as soon as you press the play button. Her voice is accompanied by a righteous melodic bass line, with the rest of the band shortly falling into position, completing the arrangement with vibey guitars and the soft, warm glow of a gospel organ.

All of these sounds have been fastened to the sturdy foundation of the drum kit, contributing a chill, forward momentum that will have you bopping your head within the first thirty seconds. The subtle sounds of congas and woodblocks add a delicious sublayer to the groove, with call-and-response auxiliary vocals imbuing a wondrous sense of depth.

Without a doubt, the highlight here is Palmer’s sweet and eloquent vocal performance, which offers the listener a smooth delivery akin to Amy Winehouse and Kee’ahn, with some gentle nods toward Nora Jones. The result is a summery track that will leave you with some delightfully soulful pep in your step.

Apple Of My Eye” comes ahead of Palmer’s forthcoming sophomore LP, Take Me To The Water, and if the rest of the record contains these same, remarkable vibes, we simply cannot wait to hear the rest of it.
